Cancer immunology: Importance of the epidermis for investigative analysis.

The main debate in cancer immunology now centres on the more fundamental issue of tumor-specific antigens rather than debates over the viability of the immunosurveillance theory of cancer. Although significant effort has been made to show the existence of these antigens, their role in cancer in general has not been established. Most research has focused on the serological investigation of three tumour types: human malignant melanoma, mouse sarcoma, and mouse leukaemia. From this work, a preliminary taxonomy of the surface antigens expressed by these tumours is beginning to emerge.
